26th Week, Ordinary Time, Thursday, 04-10-12

Job 19:21-27 / Luke 10:1-12

As we may have already known by now, there is a  mixture of black and white in almost everything.

Where there is darkness, there is some light, and where there is light there are some shadows.

A wise man may succumb to some foolishness at time, and a fool may have his moments of wisdom.

In the 1st reading, Job initially portrays God as his tormentor, and yet a bit further down the passage he calls on God as his Avenger.

A few chapters before this, Job was calling on God to be his judge and defending his innocence against his three friends who were accusing him of some hidden faults that resulted in his misfortune.

At Chapter 19, Job is only beginning to discover the reality of the mystery of God. From being a judge, God is now at times a tormentor and yet at times his Avenger.

Job will discover more and more about the God in the chapters to come.

Even in the gospel, the reality of the mission seems to have a mixture of adventure and danger.

On the one hand, the disciples are sent like labourers into the rich harvest, yet on the other hand they are being sent like lambs among wolves.

And just like Job who will discover slowly the mystery of God, so too will we as we experience the adventure and the danger in living out our faith in an unpredictable world.

And through it all, may we keep the hope that one day our eyes will look on God and then we will truly know the mystery of life.
